SCA Road Running & Grand Prix Series Update

Congratulations 2010 Road Running Grand Prix Winners!
Dale Campbell: 4511 - 1st - Tania Fischer: 4420
Jon Megeff: 4320 - 2nd - Alison Atkinson: 4371
Ray Knerr: 4306 - 3rd - Kirsten Leetch: 4335
Lydia Salinas: 4234 - 4th - Rich Gust: 4222
Rosalva Bonilla: 4203 - 5th - Nabor Gomez: 4180

Overall 2010 Road Running Grand Prix Champions Tania Fischer and Dale Campbell held off any challengers to win the top prize, despite the final surge of talent at the November Dana Point Turkey Trot 10K. The final results for the individual competition closely mirrors the team competition: Tania Fischer is joined by fellow teammate, and third place women’s finisher, Kirsten Leetch from The Janes Elite Racing. The Janes finished second in the team competition, right behind 2010 Road Running Grand Prix Team Champions Club Ed Running. Not surprisingly, no fewer than three top ten finishers hail from this South Bay powerhouse running club: second place overall finishers Alison Atkinson and Jon Megeff, and fourth place men’s finisher Rich Gust. Rounding out the women’s division are 2009 Champions Lydia Salinas with fourth place overall, and Rosalva Bonilla in fifth place. Ray Knerr takes home the third place men’s finish, and Nabor Gomez is the fifth place finisher. Both Gomez and Campbell compete for Team Runners High.

Congratulations to all the runners who participated in the USA Track & Field Southern California Association Road Running Grand Prix. 2010 saw the numbers of runners in the Road Running Grand Prix more than double, from 161 runners in 2009, to a total of 389 in 2010. Several factors contributed to the increased turnout: the series was expanded from seven races in 2009 to nine races in 2010. Interest was piqued by new two events for Southland runners: the revised Honda LA Marathon Presented by K-Swiss, and the inaugural Southern California Association Road Mile Championships. The prize money was increased from $800 to a total of $2,000, and 2010 saw an explosion of interest by youth runners in the Road Running Grand Prix, including the dominant youth team, and 2010 Champions, the Tustin-based Equalizers.

Competitors in 2010 took the standards set by the 2009 runners and considerably raised the bar. The question is: What can we expect for 2011? In February of 2010, no one in the Association familiar with team road racing even had Club Ed Running on their radar. Who will be the next Club Ed Running? With two finishers in the top ten, can we expect to see more competition from Team Runners High? Are the Janes set to close the narrow gap between their team and Club Ed Running? Is there a youth club ready to mount a challenge to The Equalizers?

Join us on February 6, 2011 at the Redondo Beach 5K as we kick off 2011, and be sure to bring your "A" game! The 5 km race is the official Southern California Association 5 km Championship race! We will be offering more great prizes, and holding our official 2010 awards ceremony after the 5 km race.

See you at the starting line!

LA84 Track & Field Clinics

December 27, 2010

Hi Friends:

Several people asked for a copy of the full agenda for the free Jan 8, 2011, LA84 Foundation Track & Field clinic that will be offered at Paramount High School.

Once you have a chance to download the attached agenda, your biggest dilemma is going to be to try to figure out which great sessions and coaches you will choose from the all the incredible offerings presented throughout the day.

Not only will you have a chance to attend hours of sessions offered on every single event area in high school track but you will also have a chance to learn about the basic biomechanics that affect every event, how to properly teach kids to come out of blocks, active warm up techniques, plyometrics, developing training plans, the keys to success in the relays, and much more from some of the greatest coaches in the sport.

Remember, this clinic, as well as the Advanced Clinic offered on Jan 22 at Mt. SAC, are both free for all coaches and interested adults who would like to attend.

We will once again be back at the wonderful facility at Paramount High School--Paramount is centrally located to everyone in Southern California (it is just about five minutes west of Cerritos College--home of the CIF SS, Masters Meet, and state meet when it is in Southern California). Take a look.... http://www.paramount.k12.ca.us/maps/paramount_senior/index.jsp .

If you have any questions or want additional information, please call Devin Elizondo (323-730-4618) or Tim O’Rourke (626-253-0693).

Also, remember, there will be three more great clinics offered in 2011....

SCA Road Running & Grand Prix Series Update

The Equalizers Track Club Win 2010 Youth Road Running Grand Prix!

To say that the The Equalizers Track Club dominated the 2010 Youth Road Running Grand Prix would be a vast understatement. More than 100 members of this incredibly talented USATF club participated in the 2010 series. 22 of the top 24 Grand Prix medalists are from the The Equalizers Track Club, leaving no doubt that they are a major force in youth long distance running in the Southern California Association.

Members of the Equalizers participated in almost every Grand Prix distance, including the 1 mile, 5 km, 8 km, 10 km, 15 km and full marathon distances. And Equalizer members participated both as road runners, and race walkers.

Following their 2009 defeat to the talented Atlanta Track Club, Compex Racing made a commitment to up their game for 2010. The team stuck to their plan, trained and raced hard through the fall, and peaked right in time to claim the USATF National Title, leaving the 2009 Champions Atlanta Track Club with the second place finish.

Coach Pete Magill remarked that this was "One of the most satisfying team wins I’ve been part of, rivaled only by the first Fluffy Bunny win. While winning three straight with Team Runners High was a blast, in those days we were "young" 40-44-year-olds, and it came easy. To do it this year with 3 of our top 5 guys being 49 years old - and our sixth man 48 - was really something."

Also competing in the national cross country showdown were the 2010 USATF Southern California Association Open Championship teams The Janes Elite Racing, and the Run Racing Track Club.

In the open women's division, the Janes came in 18th in a competitive field at the McAlpine Greenway Park scoring 456 points. Run Racing finished 11th overall, with a score of 335 points.

While a new USATF organization, Club Ed Running has consistently yielded some of the best scores in the 2010 Road Running Grand Prix, with an age-graded average score of 85.4%. The solid consistency of Club Ed Running team members Alison Atkinson (F-43), Nathalie Higley (F-40), Jon Megeff (M-47) and Rich Gust (M-51) proved insurmountable to second place finishers The Janes Elite Racing and third place finishers (and 2009 Champions) Track Club L.A. Following the Santa Clarita Half Marathon, Club Ed Running led by more than 800 points. An outstanding performance at the Dana Point Turkey Trot 10K by The Janes Elite Racing only narrowed Club Ed’s lead to 348 points, making Club Ed Running the undisputed 2010 Road Running Grand Prix Champions.
